Tucker and Marks is an interior design and decorating company based in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1986 by Suzanne Tucker and Timothy Marks, the studio has grown to be one of the largest of its kind on the West Coast, designing luxurious and elegant, extremely comfortable and inviting homes. In this article, we will talk about the ideas of sofa upholstery fabric for living rooms from Tucker and Marks!
Tucker and Marks create a broad spectrum of living environments – from well-appointed family homes, mountain lodges and beach houses, to country villas and estates as well as large apartments in some of San Francisco’s most prestigious addresses – for a steady stream of new and longtime clients. The studio works throughout the United States, from California to New York and the Eastern Seaboard, from Hawaii to Wyoming to Arkansas. For 30 years, their mission has been one and the same: to create personalized living environments that the clients are proud to call home.
Tucker and Marks specialize in comfortable high-end residential interiors that are tailored to each individual client. Their design work is highly detail-oriented. They attend to their clients’ every need and desire – from designing custom furnishings and sumptuous upholstery to procuring specialized lighting, finely detailed linens and beautiful accessories, and curating exceptional art and antique collections. Tucker and Marks endeavour to design a home that encompasses their clients’ individual and personal style and they thrive on developing meaningful and personal relationships with their clients.
This apartment is located in a converted office tower in New York’s Flatiron District, overlooking Madison Square Park. While the residence did not require a gut renovation, strategic changes included replacing the entry’s heavily veined marble with a more tranquil limestone, staining the floors dark ebony, implementing a well-thought-out lighting plan and painting the walls a warmer vanilla colour. The homeowners’ scholarly collection of art – including Helen Frankenthaler, Yayoi Kusama, and Anish Kapoor – was complemented by a thoughtfully curated collection of one-of-a-kind pieces. This includes vintage pieces by Fornasetti and Philip & Kelvin Laverne, as well as stunning dandelion light fixtures by Studio Drift.
The many precedents of beautiful local Spanish architecture became the source of inspiration for this California waterfront property. Working with a team of talented local craftspeople, Tucker and Marks reworked the entire house for a better flow of rooms and ample guest space, adding arches, wood beams and wrought-iron details, as well as a glazed rear façade. Everything had to be approachable; Tucker and Marks wanted to evoke a feeling that was more collected than decorated, electing to accomplish this with a cross-cultural assemblage of furniture, textural fabrics and one-of-a-kind accessories, including some outstanding vintage pieces from the sixties and seventies. This home is all about beach life and it’s meant to be welcoming to bare feet and bathing suits.
This jewel of a house is circa 1908 and has wonderful bones and fabulous views of the bay. Tucker and Marks handled all of the interior architecture – reconfiguring rooms, improving the flow, creating sightlines, adding skylights to capture and maximize the daylight. The house has a traditional bent, but with opening up to the other rooms, Tucker and Marks were able to bring it to a more casual and contemporary way of living. Incorporating something old and beautiful into a room transforms it in a subtle way and gives a welcomed tension between the old and new. The key to great design is capturing the spirit of the client and the essence of the space.
Beautifully sited on a hillside within the trees, this Napa country house has a wonderful serenity, due in part to the wonderful details that allow it to capture the light in every season. Tucker and Marks wanted to keep its timeless feeling while updating the interiors. All design decisions emerged from the desire to retain a feeling of sophisticated ease and the inherent relationships between indoor and outdoor spaces. A country house should have an open, manageable flow between indoor and outdoor living areas and proportions that fit naturally into the location.
Architect Andrew Skurman reconfigured the floor plan of this 6000-square foot San Francisco residence beautifully to create a circular flow for living and entertaining. The owners appreciate both the classic decorative arts and contemporary collecting and have a couture approach to life: from the art placement to the faux bois, marble and tortoiseshell finishes, from the Fortuny-clad powder room to the bleached oak in the kitchen, perfection was paramount. A couture approach to life and living.
Keeping in mind the 1920’s Mediterranean vernacular of this newly-built hacienda, Tucker and Marks used strong Spanish-style design elements – terracotta floors, hand-hewn beams, plaster walls, steel doors – and appropriate Moorish details to create the backdrop for the owners’ furnishings and collections. A mix of old and new gives any house character and adding elements of history immediately grounds a new house and gives it a sense of place. A polished mix of fine antiques, richly sensual textiles and beautifully designed accessories foundations for a timeless home. A house can be a lifelong romance and Tucker and Marks should find ourselves falling in love with their homes over and over again.
This gracious seven-bedroom family home with a pool pavilion and gardens features all the traditional English country house details and took inspiration from the historic houses of David Adler. The rooms are equally evocative, with antique rugs, lighting, textiles and the rare pieces of furniture that resonate with history. Individuality is the very essence of what Tucker and Marks do. A place belongs forever to whoever claims it hardest, remembers it most obsessively, wrenches it from itself, shapes it, renders it, loves it so radically that he remakes it in his own image.
This stunning mountain lodge provides high drama – and massive amounts of stone. Picking up on its warm hues – russets, saffrons, ochres and golds – Tucker and Marks selected enveloping textiles, rich wood tones and sumptuous furnishings to create approachable, functional and comfortable year-round rooms. Style and vernacular are always subjective, but ease and comfort must be a given. When the scale of the pieces in a room is just right, the room sings, it’s blissful to be in it.
This hilltop house features a flowing series of vaulted interior spaces and broad exterior terraces that capture both the morning and evening sun. Tucker and Marks took a playful approach to finishes and textiles by mixing textured indigenous stone, hand-hewn and sandblasted woods, antiques, new pieces, and fabrics – linen prints, cushy chenilles, and soft cotton – that had both a modern and casual feel. Colour captivates, enhances, and inspires.
The design of this neoclassical Georgian villa was an exercise in building beautiful forms and volumes, enhancing them with architectural details and moulding, and using custom furnishings, colours, paints, and textiles to make the interiors of this formal house approachable and intimate. Tucker and Marks had the opportunity to source unusual and rare antiques and design one-of-a-kind spaces detailed with custom finishes and embellishments – an exceptional level of individualized attention that creates a very personalized home. Scale, proportion, balance and harmony are the timeless essentials of classical elements. Antiques resonate with history’s silent voices.
