While the residence did not require a gut renovation, strategic changes included replacing the entry’s heavily veined marble with a more tranquil limestone, staining the floors dark ebony, implementing a well-thought-out lighting plan and painting the walls a warmer vanilla colour. The homeowners’ scholarly collection of art – including Helen Frankenthaler, Yayoi Kusama, and Anish Kapoor – was complemented by a thoughtfully curated collection of one-of-a-kind pieces. This includes vintage pieces by Fornasetti and Philip & Kelvin Laverne, as well as stunning dandelion light fixtures by Studio Drift.

The many precedents of beautiful local Spanish architecture became the source of inspiration for this California waterfront property. Working with a team of talented local craftspeople, Tucker and Marks reworked the entire house for a better flow of rooms and ample guest space, adding arches, wood beams and wrought-iron details, as well as a glazed rear façade. Everything had to be approachable; Tucker and Marks wanted to evoke a feeling that was more collected than decorated, electing to accomplish this with a cross-cultural assemblage of furniture, textural fabrics and one-of-a-kind accessories, including some outstanding vintage pieces from the sixties and seventies. This jewel of a house is circa 1908 and has wonderful bones and fabulous views of the bay. Tucker and Marks handled all of the interior architecture – reconfiguring rooms, improving the flow, creating sightlines, adding skylights to capture and maximize the daylight. The house has a traditional bent, but with opening up to the other rooms, Tucker and Marks were able to bring it to a more casual and contemporary way of living. Incorporating something old and beautiful into a room transforms it in a subtle way and gives a welcomed tension between the old and new. The key to great design is capturing the spirit of the client and the essence of the space.

Beautifully sited on a hillside within the trees, this Napa country house has a wonderful serenity, due in part to the wonderful details that allow it to capture the light in every season. Tucker and Marks wanted to keep its timeless feeling while updating the interiors. All design decisions emerged from the desire to retain a feeling of sophisticated ease and the inherent relationships between indoor and outdoor spaces. A country house should have an open, manageable flow between indoor and outdoor living areas and proportions that fit naturally into the location.

Architect Andrew Skurman reconfigured the floor plan of this 6000-square foot San Francisco residence beautifully to create a circular flow for living and entertaining. The owners appreciate both the classic decorative arts and contemporary collecting and have a couture approach to life: from the art placement to the faux bois, marble and tortoiseshell finishes, from the Fortuny-clad powder room to the bleached oak in the kitchen, perfection was paramount. This gracious seven-bedroom family home with a pool pavilion and gardens features all the traditional English country house details and took inspiration from the historic houses of David Adler. Tucker and Marks had the opportunity to source unusual and rare antiques and design one-of-a-kind spaces detailed with custom finishes and embellishments – an exceptional level of individualized attention that creates a very personalized home.
