A family’s holiday house project began immediately after purchase but before construction concluded, allowing for essential improvements to the interior envelope across from the 175-acre North Star Nature Preserve, located just east of Aspen along the Roaring Fork River. The goal of the design was to raise the building’s skeleton and finish it with high contrast materials that would provide depth and character to the otherwise fresh construction. Ebonized oak flooring was installed, and the walls were coated in a light, off-white colour to provide a strong contrast. The stone worktops in the kitchen and baths were honed to give them a lived-in appearance.

The décor evolved in tandem with the internal architecture. Fabrics made entirely of natural fibres (raw linen, leather, wool, and cow skin) were chosen to give comfort in an otherwise sophisticated setting. To avoid drawing attention away from the stunning mountains beyond, an understated and practically pattern-free palette was used. The old, rough-hewn timbers framing the ceilings were left undisturbed to include some regional influences in the pared-down canvas. The fireplaces were redesigned and erected using dry-stacked limestone modules of varied sizes.
